Hematology tests screen blood formation and blood disorders. These tests can screen the blood count (a count of the number of red and white blood cells, and platelets present), detect blood parasites such as malaria, toxoplasmosis, and microfiliariasis, assess granulocytosis, examine bone marrow, test the status of Iron and detect anemias, determine for blood typing and blood matching prior to blood transfusion, determine whether a lesion is vascular, nonvascular or hemorrhagic, check for thrombotic disorders, examine proteins in the blood such as hemoglobin and to check thalassemia or sickle cell anemia, detect antigens inside and on cells, and assess Gaucher’s disease, Niemann-Pick disease, glycogen storage disease, chronic myeloproliferative disorders, and hemophagocytic syndromes, among others.

Coagulation tests evaluate the body’s ability to control blood clotting, which is an essential function of the body designed to prevent blood loss. These tests can detect coagulation disorders such as hemophilia, and monitor its treatment.

Serological tests are used to detect infections in rheumatic illnesses, and diagnose immune deficiencies deriving from lack of antibodies, such as X-linked agammaglobulinemia.
