Alpha Fetoprotein Test

Overview

An alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) blood test can be performed both in males and females. During female pregnancy, the amount of AFP in the blood of a pregnant woman can forecast birth defects such as Down’s syndrome and other congenital problems.

In children, men and non-pregnant women the alpha-fetoprotein test is used to diagnose certain types of cancer including liver, testicle, ovarian, stomach, pancreatic, or renal cell. This test is also used in the diagnose of lymphoma, brain tumors and Hodgkin’s disease.
